During his 11 years in the U.S. Army, James Walker saw the war and
peace, the myth and reality, the compassion and cruelty of the
military and its members.

As part of the Army's 1st Special Forces Group, Walker was twice
deployed to Iraq during the first Gulf War in the early 1990s, earning
the Army's Commendation Medal for "heroism, meritorious achievement
and meritorious service." As a gay service member, Walker was part of
the first wave of soldiers investigated under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
when the policy was implemented in 1993.
