Unfortunately I'm not an SO.  I'm just a friend of an MTF.  She's going through some hard times being shy.  Tends to cut herself off from others.  What things could I do or say to help encourage her?

Hi Jemma,

Actions speak louder than words, and the fact that your here
means your freind has someone special to support her.

All you can do is let her know you are there for her, and wait
until she directly or indirectly lets you know how you can help.
If she is shy, pushing the point too hard may well end in isolation,
so easy does it...

When there is something more specific to deal with, post your
questions here, and I'm sure help will be at hand.

My best wishes to you both in these difficult times...

Jemma,

You are doing the best thing you can do by just being there and being her friend.  Just let her know you are there when she needs you and then be there when she needs you.  Don't push her but don't let her backslide ether.  She will see that you are still there when the times are tough.
