Marble said two years ago, the National Stonewall Democrats had trouble working with party leadership in Tennessee, but things have changed since a new party chair and executive director took office.

Although Tennessee did not meet its goal by counting delegates alone, he noted the state is sending a black transgender resident as a delegate.

"Electing an openly transgender person of color as delegate to the convention is a pretty big step for that party," he said.
