Lee

Hi,

New here, have been reading the board past couple days and am impressed by everyone's insight, wisdom, and knowledge.

I was diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder as a teen in the early 1990's, but without any support at all.

Looking to find a GID therapist, most importantly to deal with personal shame/hatred issues due to my gender identity (FTM).

How do I find a good therapist, and one that has experience in gender issues?

Welcome Lee! I'm Nero.

If you give me your state, I can try to look up therapists in your area for you.

Hey bro!

I'm guessing you were diagnosed but were either unable to do anything about it, or did not do anything else about it by now (like RLE for example). Correct me if I'm wrong.

It must suck to have known all along and not had a shoulder to lean on. We'll be here for you whenever you need, just say the word :) We're all here to help each other out. Hope to see you around the forums more.

Thank you Nero and Nate for your responses.

I live in northern CA.

As for my diagnosis as a teen, there was no help/treatment/whatever offered by the diagnosing psychiatrist. It was just another diagnostic label that specific doctor listed as something I had wrong with me.

Basically the explanation by him was that I needed to start learning to be a "girl", instead of the abnormal thing he thought I was. It didn't matter that I didn't feel or see myself as female.

Here's a link for a list of US Gender Therapists. Scroll down for CA.

I looked through the list yesterday and for the most part, unless you live in SanFran or LA, there aren't any gender therapists on there in your area. There are a few scattered ones in places like Berkeley or San Mateo, but most of the ones on the list are in SF/LA.

:-/

If anybody knows any gender therapists in San Jose/Santa Clara, please let me know.

Gluck to you though, Lee.

If you spring for a ticket they let you ride inside.

What you need to do is get a handle on this and deal with it.  Your assessment of your old shrink is understated.  He was also a thief, a killer of hope, and must have taken great pleasure in making you so unhappy.

Welcome to the forum hon.  There are many of us that live here in Northern CA.

That's what I meant, ma'am.  The top row of seats.
