To be very honest, I didn't sleep well last night, too much late coffee and am feeling it today. Besides, the overriding concern in my life right now seem to be my 10-year olds venture into "tackle-football" of the Pop Warner variety! *sigh*

I feel a poor mom because shouldn't I be remanding him to more artistic and less violent pursuits? Shouldn't I be totally against him even beginning to enter into a sport that places an emphasis on size, strength and crushing the opponent with such vigor that ijuries, sometimes fatal, often horrendous occur with a fair amount of regularity? What are they going to do with my baby!! Will they not turn him into some sort of swaggering, spitting, bulky and ruthless alien I never knew?

Peer pressure is a strong thing. A parent has very little recourse to change the mind of their children.

In my case I find sports uninviting. My son played soccer, I picked him up and dropped him off at games and practice. He got frustrated early on,  lacking the skills. I do not have the skills so I was no help. He wanted to quit mid-season but I told him he had a responsibility to the team to finish the season. He never wanted to play sports again.

This is my son's first "tackle" year. He played touch last year and loved it. Older and bigger he's "graduated" now. And after a week of practice is still anxious to keep playing. He like the game and is a pretty good blocker.

So, we shall see.

In the meantime if you read to the end you can find some interesting blog spots as well. :)

I thought about putting in gender studies, but nobody ever posts there... I figured it would be seen more here. If you think there's a more appropriate place, let me know.

Hmmmmm, i just realized there's no sports section here. I hadn't missed it

Sports can be cool.  They range in levels and complexity, matter of fact, here is a pretty good article about some of the more obscure ones.

The trouble is, that at some point, right around high school that football does turn from a fun game into a blood sport, and that should not be discounted, nor should the high rate of injury.
