M or F?

In the upper right corner of every form you'll ever fill out, just to the right of your name and above your social security number, are two little boxes. One is labelled "M," the other "F."

The idea is, you're supposed to put a check mark in one of the boxes.

I've always found this stressful (in a small way) and insulting (in a not-so-small way). It's not a question I can answer! Why aren't there checkboxes for "not sure," "decline to state," and "it depends"?

If it's above my social security, I must put "F." That's what you'll get if you look up my number. I wouldn't want to be nailed for fraud.

If it's something less important than a legal document, than I'll select "M." If there is a "decline to state" answer, that I will select that one. Mostly because to most people 'gender' means 'sex.'

Hopefully I will be able to change that legal "F" to an "M" and end all the confusion. I am very fortunate that in this country the "M" doesn't come at the cost of phalloplasty.

Do what I do and let others check it for you, I simply dont fill it out and let them guess. :)
