Misadventures in Name Change

So where to begin. Ah yes. I got up very early Friday morning with all intentions of getting my name changed and gender flag changed on my DL. I had ALL of my paper work filled out and supporting documents and proof of identity galore. I arrive at the DMV about a half hour before they open at 8:00. Oddly 100 were already there in line wrapped around the building ahead of me. Oh lord this is gonna suck I thought.
Prior to this I did a lot of research about name changes in California. Turns out CA is a common law state and you can actually change you name at will if you were so inclined. I have in fact already done this. With a few exception I have in fact been known as Nichole for over a year now. I have both my cable and utilities in my name as well as Dr.'s offices, spas and other facilities I frequent. And now I have a temporary drivers license that reflects this as well. Even my employer is making the appropriate name changes as I have now transitioned at work.
