Sacramento's Lambda Players are survivors.

The challenges for a community-based gay, lesbian and transgender theater company are many, but as Lambda celebrates its 20th season, it seems to be thriving.

Lambda opens its new season this weekend with Jason Robert Brown's dramatic musical "The Last Five Years." The selection comes as a slight departure from Lambda's original mission, but artistic director Tom Swanner is willing to take the chance.

"I know it doesn't really fall into a gay-lesbian theater thing, other than it being a musical," Swanner says.
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
