Irreverent Icon

Some might argue that ''icon'' is too reverent a word to apply to
Holly Woodlawn. From Puerto Rico to Miami to Times Square, Woodlawn
has seen her share of seediness and squalor. The title of her
autobiography sums her career succinctly: A Low Life in High Heels.
But while some might dismiss Woodlawn, consider those few lines from
Lou Reed's ''Walk on the Wild Side'' that have helped immortalize this
genuinely American character:
Holly came from Miami F-L-A
hitch-hiked her way across the USA
plucked her eyebrows on the way.
