A series of events at Texas Tech has been planned to raise awareness of issues in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

GLBT Awareness Month at the university will begin Saturday with a picnic at Stubbs Park and continue into mid-October with movies, lectures and other activities.

Tech's Office of Student Diversity Relations sponsors the awareness month. Similar events have been annually held at the university for about a decade, said Rich Lenox, an organizer and the associate director of Tech's student counseling center.

This year's event will focus on transgender issues. Transgenders reassign the sex or gender they were born with or have gender expressions considered nontraditional for their sex or gender.
