The Commission's Sex Files project was established to conduct research
and consult with the sex and gender diverse community in Australia on
the issue of legal recognition of sex in documents and government
records.

During the Commission's project, members of the sex and gender diverse
community raised concerns about the legal recognition of sex,
particularly in relation to the ability of a person to change the sex
recorded on their birth certificate.
