Hizmom already said they just shrug their shoulders like is doesn't matter.

Maybe the issue, as Hizmon put it ,is really that they don't want to accidently out their son. In which case I would just incourage you to use the pronouns that refer to them as they are now even when talking about the past - as you said, get into the habit.

At the same time I don't think you need to forget that in your eyes you did have a little girl at one stage. It is ok to miss that little girl.
