It looks like the hardline bishops are flexing their muscle against "renegade" progressive parishes - the iron fist of Papa Ratzi is coming down on American Catholics. (NYT):

Such has been true about just about every election and the Church, going back to Rome at least.

hopefully the rebels will have backbone enough to accomplish something.  I heard some LGBT friendly Jesuits are breaking away from their fascist leaders.

The Jesuit churches in SF are very accepting.  When I feel like going to Mass (twice a year or so) I go to the Jesuit and Dominican churches here and not the ones run by the local bishop.  They don't seem to have any problem with any of it.
