A Love Song & A Lullaby, Together. O, My Son

In the Spring of 1998 a child passed from his mother's uterus and eventually made his way to my arms. It was snowing when he came from the birth canal. His name was to be the name of a king: Ian Somerled, King of the Isles (The Hebrides) who passed in the year 1164 while invading Scotland near where Glasgow sprawls today.

They took him from us both rather quickly for his umbilical cord had become wrapped around his neck during a delay in the birth process that resulted from a doctor delivering another child at a hospital down the street. The nurses explained the doctor liked to actually be present for the birth. So they had my then-wife not push during contractions until the doctor could arrive.

He was blue, my son, as though painted like a Celtic warrior with woad before battle. After brief holds by his mother and I he was taken away and spent 24 hours in the neo-natal intensive care. I am certain that I have never been so worried and distraught as I was after his birth. That 24 hours was the longest I have ever spent.
