I couldn't help but notice an uplifting turn in television programming
while going about my channel-surfing duties for GayWired.com over the
past couple of weeks. I discovered not one, not two, but three
different documentaries or talk shows that focused on transgender
individuals.

Of course, there are hundreds of channels out there, and chances are
that any given week could include a couple of trans-topical programs
on some obscure channels. The difference here is that the programming
has been showcased by the higher-visibility likes of The CW, BBC
America and WEtv. And they blessedly weren't just surface examinations
of the subject matter, either.

First up was the captivating documentary Sex Change Soldier, first
broadcast on the UK's Channel 4 and brought stateside this month via
the BBC. It documented the journey of former Capt. Ian Hamilton, a
multiple-war veteran and paratrooper in the British Army.
