The last three days have been witness to high drama between the police
and queer rights activists and their supporters in Bangalore. It began
on October 20 when the police arrested five hijras for allegedly
extorting money at a traffic junction in the South Bangalore locality,
Banashankari.
These arrests were part of a drive by the Bangalore police to
eradicate the 'eunuch menace.' The hijras who were arrested called a
crisis intervention team from Sangama, which works with sexual
minorities in Bangalore.
Three hijras and two kothis from Sangama went to the Banashankari
police station to negotiate the release of the arrested hijras.
