Obama's Cabinet: Start With Al Gore
By Richard Cohen, The Washington Post

If there is a single appointment Barack Obama could make to signal how dramatically things will change in Washington, it would be to name Albert Gore Jr. -- former House member, former senator, former vice president, former presidential nominee and current Custodian of the Planet -- as secretary of state. For all the other aspirants to the job, sorry -- this is an inconvenient truth.

Can you imagine a bolder statement about a new direction when it comes to global warming and the general care of our abused planet? Gore has won a Nobel Peace Prize for his work in this area (and an Oscar, to boot), and his appointment would signal a dramatic shift from the indifference of the Bush era with its cold shoulder to the Kyoto treaty. In one stroke, the United States would emerge as the leader of nations in the effort to save the planet from ourselves -- and could prepare for the consequences of a changed world.

First I don't think he'd do it, which is not a minor point.  Second, if AlGore needed a slot, the place America needs him in is EPA and not State.

EPA for sure.  Sec of State has too many responsibilities.. what he needs is a post where he can really focus on the environment, and only the environment.

If you were going to give General Powell a post, I'd suggest Sec of Ed, that way he is doing something that has great meaning to him, you have his military experience to call upon when needed.  And, I do not favor ex/ or current generals as Sec of Defense, civilian control over the military is at the heart of our understanding, and its been a long, long time since that was not upheld.

I thought Al gore was a good politician but after his enviromental work i think he needs to stay away from politics. Think about it if Al Gore accepted another political postion it would give something for all the conservatives to go see all that global warming talk was just a means for him to weasel back into the political spectrum. It could undue all the good he has done for the enviroment in one stroke. I think hes better off as a scientist and spokes person than as a politicain.

QuoteI think hes better off as a scientist

His science is based on fear marketing. Half the things he said are exaggerated and half truths.

What science do you base that conclusion on. Lisa?

Science paid for by oil companies is my guess, other than that, most science supports what old Al says.

An example: the rise of sea level can be calculated by knowing the volume of snow and ice, Al's figure is based on a guess not calculations from measured facts.

QuoteMr. Steiner, the head of the United Nations environment program, said the findings complicated the global-warming narrative. The brown clouds mask the impact of the greenhouse gases, he said: Without the blocking effect of the smog, he said, climate change would be far worse.
