Gay rights advocates wait for action

When President-elect Barack Obama's plan for gay rights issues was posted on his transition website last week, his team received a tempered response from those who would be affected the most.

Gay rights advocates believe they have an influential supporter in Obama, who won two large states — Florida and California — where voters also approved anti-gay-marriage amendments. But taking those setbacks into account, and considering the deepening economic crisis, leaders in the gay community said they would give the president-elect time and space to tackle more immediate, broad-based problems before turning his attention to their agenda.

"You can bet that the community is going to be watching, and they're going to want to hear what his plans are and when they think he can move legislatively," said Denis Dison, a spokesman for The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund and the Gay & Lesbian Leadership Institute.
