If a manager couldn't find a woman with secondary Hirsutism to be his "bearded lady" he might recruit a transvestite to grow a beard and play the role instead. If he couldn't find a boy with a pronounced hare-lip to be his "rat-faced boy" he might recruit someone with extremely sharp facial features and have him wear a rat costume instead. Internally these individuals became known as "Gaff Freaks", where gaff is British slang meaning to trick or cheat.
