Some places, just because of their names, are meant to have strange things happen in them: Bend, Oregon, is one of them.
In Bend, Thomas Beatie was planning to have a baby. We're all supposed to gasp at that idea – a man having a baby – but maybe it's because the story and pictures have done the rounds (handsome bloke with goatee holds swelling stomach) it just didn't seem shocking. Anyway, we're so inured to weird scientific advances, "man has baby" registers a quiet little tut, then it's back to buttering the toast.
