An Ecuadorean real estate agent who was brutally beaten last week in Brooklyn after having racist and homophobic slurs yelled at him died in a hospital yesterday.

His crime? He was walking home from a nightclub with his arms around his brother. Apparently that so offended a group of people in an SUV that they pulled over and beat him to a pulp. By all accounts, he was straight.

Not that that should matter, since a hate crime like this is wrong no matter whether the assailants were correct in their assessment of the victim's sexuality. But it does show how homophobia doesn't have a very specific target - it's meant to stop all acts of same-sex affection through violence. It doesn't stop to respect other cultures.
