The volunteers are divided into groups according to subject matter -- men, women and transsexual -- and then into subcommittees, such as documentary and experimental.

In the early days, Carl was able to screen most of the films himself. Now, he spends a lot of his time calling filmmakers directly and doing research on films based on recommendations from other GLBT film festivals.

As the Durham festival continues to grow, it also has gained national prominence. In 2001,the festival featured the North Carolina premiere of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," which went on to become an underground cult classic and win several international awards.
