You might be surprised at my thoughts on the current Rick Warren scandal. I've hesitated to blog about it for the past couple of days, but as this story has grown bigger and bigger, it's time I stepped out and said something. It just needs to be said.

Calm down. Rick Warren is not a big deal. This tempest in a teapot will only harm our community.

With so many prominent bloggers, activists and politicos outraged, I realize this post won't be the most popular I've written. As I've mulled this over the past few days, certain key elements fell into place for me; I wonder why our leadership didn't realize some of these basic facts before they started pounding on Warren.

I was much along the same lines as well, but Rich Warrens people aren't subjected to hate crimes and death because of their beliefs or their lifestyles!

We cannot let hatred and bigotry of be allowed to be professed as difference of opinion.  That would be like inviting the KKK to the inauguration and simply say that they deserve a place in the big tent because they have a different point of view.  We simply disagree that lynching and church burning are proper methods of expressing their point of view.

In the grand scheme of things, no it isn't that big a deal.  If, somehow, Mr Obama curry's enough political good will from Mr Warren to get ENDA passed without the political right throwing too much of a temper tantrum, or heaven be praised, Mr Warren actually endorses hate crime and ENDA, then I will be happy.  This is politics we are talking about here, folks.  It's not a job for the faint of heart.  If you want to get the job done you have to kiss many different posteriors.

However if this does have some detrimental effects in the long term, then Mr. Obama will have really started his administration on the wrong foot.

I wait and see.
