Screw the gym.
The tried and true method for losing weight is running - and lots of it.
And it's free.  :D

For those of us who are old and severely arthritic, it's water-robics time.

Just cut the calories and drink a lot of water. I'm dispensing advice I won't follow, lol. Those Hershey Kisses (and I love love love Crunchie Bars for those of you in UK) keep inviting themselves into my stomach! On the bright side, most of the extra weight goes to my boobs, butt and hips these days :) Meghan

The older you get, and much past 25 is old for this, running is more than likely to hurt you at some point, rather than help.  Running a mile, and walking a mile burn off pretty much the same amount of calories, its just takes a lot longer to do it walking.

Bull. Men and women in my unit were running 10k 4 days a week when they were in their 30's.
My RSM was 40+ and could outrun most of the 20yr olds.
Past 25 is bloody well NOT too old for running.
Where did you get that old wive's tale?

My mom is like in her early fifties, but she still jogs around our yard and runs on a treadmill.

I would assume that they are conditioned and trained (odd, you wouldn't think you need special training to run, but in fact most people do if they want to minimize the impact) which is going to be the hard part for most people, if you're not used to running, the impact on the joints and such is high (higher, remember, we doing it to lose weight, so your packing on extra pounds into that impact) and if you have not been doing a lot of it, your joints and such are not used to that kind of repetitive impact and it can hurt a lot of people once they start getting to middle age and their bodies ability to recuperate and heal begins to slow.  (Run-on sentence winner of the day)

For most people starting out on a physical program - because they are overweight, implying they have not been as active as they might have been - its better to start out with something you can do without too much pain, and that you can stick with.  To start out with something hard and hurting - and if you're not use to running, its going to hurt for a long time, makes it very difficult to do the real thing, which is not going out running a couple of times, but a sustained program of ongoing physical activity.  The real need is to build a program that will work and that you can stick to in the long run and build on.  I'll bet that 'running to lose weight' is the most often started, and most often stopped program out there.  A couple of days ain't going to do it, but building a life that includes a lot of that, will.

To that end, the most successful program, is one you share with someone, a gym buddy, or running buddy, someone who can make you do it, even when you don't want to.  And 'not wanting to' was was got you there in the first place.

Or walking. 6 miles a day, 5 days a week, 1500 or less calories consumed a day... equals 50lbs loss in just over four months. At least it did for me.

Yup, walking is great stuff. Lacks the cardio aspect that running and swimming have, but still great for weight loss.
Note for some: walking to the corner store for an icecream don't count.

True, however towards the end of that period I started swimming a couple of miles at the weekend, too. That helped. And it increased my metabolism.

One thing... if you walk, don't saunter or take a leisurely stroll. That doesn't work. You have to work up a sweat by the end of it. I ended up doing the 6 miles in 1 hour 20 minutes, mostly uphill. That did the trick.

Also, drink a lot of water, eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, keep away from sweets and candy.

But more important than what you do... is your motivation and determination. Have a goal.

I'm not much on goals, they may help in the beginning, but they are artificial and prone to letdown once its been reached, better to try to build a life that incorporates lots of physical stuff and eliminates as much of the sitting around stuff as you can.

I'm really bad at running, my knees seem to object to it. And it's bloody cold outside.
