A Year of Wins and Losses
GLBT Floridians enter 2009 bruised, determined for change

By JUAN CARLOS RODRIGUEZ

QuoteSimmie Williams

The shots that killed Fort Lauderdale transgender teen Simmie Williams sparked an increased awareness for protecting trans youth, and of the disparities between the gay community and the church-fueled bigotry rampant in Broward's African-American neighborhoods. Williams was killed Feb. 23 in a section of Sistrunk Boulevard known for transgender prostitution and drug dealing. While there was no evidence connecting Williams to either crime, State Attorney General Bill McCollum denied Williams' mother, Denise King, state compensation for her murdered son on the grounds that Williams "brought his death upon himself." King has become a watchdog for gay matters in her community, and continues to press police to find the killers of her son who remain at large.
