Should the word 'marriage' be dropped from same sex marriage in order to get equal rights for all?

I have many straight acquaintances who say they are all for same sex civil unions but get jittery and defensive when same sex marriage is mentioned. The word also seems to bring out the worst with religious organizations and their followers; i.e., Prop 8.

Should the word be dropped in the hope that we'll get quicker recognition if we call it something else such as 'Glamarrage?' 'Obamarriage?'
