My psychiatrist said she would refer me to a therapist for my gender issues. I don't yet now when I'll get to go, but I've been wondering. What should I do to get ready for it?

That is sort of like staying up all night studying for your urine test.

Just be yourself, be honest.

The definition of classic transsexuality is not the only criteria a therapist will use in making a diagnosis.  Trying to game the therapist to give you a particular diagnosis is not fair to either of you.

Let us know how it goes!

Yea I have to agree the whole purpose of going to a therpaist is to be yourself and tell them the truth. lying to a therapist is just wasting time and money

I don't mean to lie to the therapist. I just am wondering how should I get my thoughts together.

As you may know, there is no objective test to diagnose transsexuality.  Basically if you say you are, then, you are.

Most gender therapists will accept you at face value.  And if you are convinced of it they will spend most of the time discussing with you how you intend to live your life.  How will you integrate yourself into society and things like that.  And during your transition they will track your progress and provide information on how to cope with the issues that arise.

One thing you can do is write down things you want to discuss with him/her so you don`t forget to bring anything up. But on the most part you will be fine if you just be yourself.

Make sure you look as stereotypically female as possible. My therapist was all over for not having a 'male enough' haircut. I know it sounds ridiculous but look like you're doing everything possible to appropriate the right gender.
I had an hour of hell for the bargain price of 150 bucks because I dared present the way I want.

Ouch Nero sounds like you had a ->-bleeped-<- for a therapist and exspensive to.
I love diana I wasn't even dressed the first day we met and her rate is only 95 an hour plus she dosen't charge extra if we go over which I had a psychologist in the past who did

christov is correct.  Be yourself because those guys will see through any attempt to hoodwink them.   They are there to help you and you are there to be helped so just relax.

If you find that you are not comfortable with the therapist/psychiatrist then seek a different one if necessary especially if you pay the bills.

Nero was also correct in that it helps if you present as typical of the gender that you believe yourself to be though I suggest you do not go over board about things as clothing, hairstyle or anything like that, you need to remain comfortable.

Finally, enjoy it because it is the start of a very interesting journey for you and hopefully a satisfactory resolution .
