Hi,
Hope this is helpful...colleges and universities, especially community colleges, are a good place to start. They usually have some type of newspaper where a free or cheap ad could be placed advertising the place and time of the meeting. There are also bulletin boards there, alternative lifestyle clubs and support groups who may be in contact with some transgender folks that would help you start your group. Most of them have libraries and open public areas which serve as free meeting areas, it would be a relatively safe and progressive environment.
Good luck with your quest, I wish you much success.

I'm nearby, but I'm still buried in anonymity.

Ah ha!  You become less anonymous the longer you're here.  Now we know your state of residence. :)  Would you be able to make it to the Susan's Fest?

sarah:
Sorry, I just happen to notice your post.
You are in a situation where you will have to take some risks.
A common way to start is to open a mailbox at a more populated town other than your own. Place an add in town newpapers or their electronic version. Don't post your phone # nor your internet mail address.  Anonimity is important since many newer people fear being found out by coworkers and neighbors, the mail box is a good neutral begining. Remember this is not about you but about the people you want to help, so it helps to provide a safe environment.
If you chose this method make sure to make the point that relationships, dating and intimacy are out.  Only as suport group. This will avoid drama and wear and tear on your group.
100 miles from Sn Fco is conservative territory, I used to live there. The demographics (mix of engineering and the Si valley) are prime for the kind of help you want to provide. Suburban and rural Calif is not as liberal as people like to think, be smart be safe.
Good luck, Sheila18
