How long to you want to be around?

Plan about that long.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

I dunno. Always lived completely for the moment. Now that I'm planning stuff, I'm just planning per goal not in years. Hard to plan in years if I'm not sure how many a goal will require.
Nero was the Forum Admin here at Susan's Place for several years up to the time of his death.

Sorry  if this get heavy

This is one of the most important things in life.
What do you want to do. Who do you want to be. THINK.
This is the easy part: get a big piece of paper, yer that stuff you can draw on. Lots of room. In the middle write me, in a box.
Draw lines of every input to your life you have above the box. Friends. lack of them, money, family. everything: be honest.

Below the box draw a key box of where you want to go. I 2009, e.g: full female with srs.  living as a female but not srs, the lot and living as a Hooters girl
;)

You choose it.

Draw the lines between what you have to support this concept. Cross out the lines that are negative. In another colur draw in this ideas or support you will need.
Seek that support. Update your analysis.

It sounds far too much troube It works.

I try and live for the moment living each day as it comes, but I have to have aims, dreams to keep me going. I wish every day for the mirracle but I know it wont happen. Its good to have something to look forward to, it keeps you focused, but live for the moment. Regret nothing and be glad to be alive...

I have always planned things (methodically if I might add), many years in advance and worked against everything to achieve my goals.  I am that kind of person, and I don't think I would be where I am today if I had lived "in the moment".  :)

It is important to live the moment as well as plan long term goals.

I do not believe in God but things like praying set a long term goal in the subconscious. So as you make calculated steps to achieve a long term goal you can assess things in the moment decide the best course of action to achieve that goal as well as put your mind to be aware of your feelings and senses at the moment. That means you can enjoy the moment of journey as some say as well as heading to a destination.

Plan about that long.

This is actually a very good answer.

I have a friend that said " If I knew I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself."

I plan for some things and others I don't. When I do plan, it's not set in stone, it's just a method for achieving a goal.
