Community Definitions:

Transgender: an inclusive umbrella term which covers anyone who transcends their birth gender for any reason. This includes but is not limited to Androgynes, Crossdressers, Drag kings, Drag queens, Intersexuals, Transsexuals, and ->-bleeped-<-s.

Androgyne: An androgynous person

Androgynous: Being neither distinguishably masculine nor feminine, as in dress, appearance, or behavior.

Crossdresser: a person wears the clothing of the opposite gender, and has no desire to permanently change their sex. There is generally no sexual motivation for the cross-dressing.

Drag kings: performers, usually gay women or transgendered men - who dress in "drag," clothing associated with the male gender, usually highly exaggerated versions thereof. Drag kings often do drag to perform, singing or lip-syncing and dancing, participating in events such as gay pride parades, cabarets, discotheques, and other celebrations and venues.

Drag queens: performers, usually gay men or transgendered women - who dress in "drag," clothing associated with the female gender, usually highly exaggerated versions thereof. Drag queens often do drag to perform, singing or lip-syncing and dancing, participating in events such as gay pride parades, cabarets, discotheques, and other celebrations and venues.

Intersexual: a person born with the full or partial sex organs of both sexes; with underdeveloped or ambiguous sex organs; a sex chromosome karyotype other than XX or XY; or sex hormone receptor problems which prevent normal absorption of Estrogen or Androgens. Intersexual persons may seek to make their body as congruent as possible with the preferred sex through surgery and hormone treatments.

Non-Binary: A person whose gender identity is not exclusively masculine or feminine‍. A Non-Binary person may express a combination of masculinity and femininity, or neither, in their day to day gender expression. This is sometimes also known as Genderqueer.

Significant other: for the purpose of this site, someone close to a person who is transgender. This may be a mother, father, son, daughter, sister, brother, family member, husband, wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, or friend.

Transsexual: a person who is mentally one gender, but has the body of the other. They desire to live and be accepted as a member of the mental gender, this is generally accompanied by the strong desire to make their body as congruent as possible with the preferred sex through surgery and hormone treatments.

->-bleeped-<-: a person who wears the clothing of the opposite gender, and has no desire to permanently change their sex. There is generally a strong sexual motivation for the cross-dressing.

Other terms:

Post-Ops: Transsexuals who have had surgical procedures to make their body as congruent as possible with their preferred sex. For MTF transsexuals this is generally considered to be after Genital surgery (GRS, orchiectomy, and/or penectomy), for FTM transsexuals it is generally considered to be after top surgery.

Pre-ops: Transsexuals who desire to to make their body as congruent as possible with their preferred sex, but have not yet had the surgical procedures for whatever reason.

This is not intended to be a glossary of all tg related terms. This just defines the make-up of the community on this site.

Proper Pronouns

Always use proper gender terms and pronouns based on the person's expressed self identity. Intentionally misgendering someone will result in a ban no matter what provocation you think you experienced.

For Male to Female Transsexuals: Male to Female transsexuals are women, and should be addressed in the feminine,  Brava instead of Bravo. recommended pronouns include She, Her, and Hers.

For Female to Male Transsexuals: Female to Male transsexuals are men, and should be addressed in the masculine Bravo instead of Brava. Recommended pronouns include He, Him, and His.

Gender Neutral: Whenever possible avoid the use feminine or masculine forms. Recommended pronouns include Them, They, and Their.

Note: ->-bleeped-<- and ->-bleeped-<- are considered extremely pejorative and should not be used on this site. Terms like Ladyboy should be limited to use in their specific cultural reference.

Fact Check Overview: Falsehoods and Misleading Tropes About Transgender People
By GLAAD - July 24, 2025
Link to Full Article

Below are GLAAD's framings of some of the most common falsehoods and misleading tropes. Each link includes further context and usage guidance.

(Click the link to go to the source pages for more information on each topic.)

"Gender Ideology"
https://glaad.org/fact-sheet-for-reporters-term-to-avoid-gender-ideology/

"Gender ideology" is an inaccurate term deployed by opponents to undermine and dehumanize transgender and nonbinary people. It is not a term transgender people use to describe themselves. "Ideology" describes a political construct and opinion that can be debated, argued about, and can change over time. Opponents use this term to imply that our gender is not "real" but just a "belief".

Intentional Mischaracterizations of Transgender Health Care
https://glaad.org/intentional-mischaracterizations-of-transgender-health-care/

Gender Affirming health care for transgender people, of all ages, is supported by every major U.S. medical association and leading health authority. Efforts to ban and criminalize this care are not based on medical or scientific expertise, and frequently employ intentional misinformation about what health care for trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people may encompass. Use of inflammatory terms such as "mutilation" or "castration", as an example.

Misleading Narratives About Transgender People and Restrooms, Locker Rooms, and Single-Sex Spaces
https://glaad.org/fact-sheet-misleading-narratives-about-transgender-people-and-restrooms-locker-rooms-and-other-single-sex-spaces/

Current legislative and executive branch efforts to restrict transgender people from public restrooms and similar spaces are based more on fearmongering than facts. Research shows no evidence of safety risks for cisgender people when trans people use restrooms aligning with their authentic gender. Transgender people are at elevated risk for harassment and violence in these spaces.

Harming someone in a public restroom is already illegal. Bathroom bans often have no guidance on enforcement, and can result in invasions of privacy for everyone when individual citizens randomly (and often mistakenly) attempt to enforce these vaguely constructed laws.

Transgender Participation in Sports
https://glaad.org/fact-sheet-for-reporters-transgender-participation-in-sports/

Transgender participation in sports was a non-issue before being adopted as a strategic wedge issue by right-wing political figures and anti-equality groups.

Transgender people make up a tiny fraction of all athletes.

All players follow protocols to participate. International Olympic Committee guidelines for transgender inclusion say there should be "no presumed advantage" based on sex assigned at birth or sex characteristics." IOC guidelines were created in consultation with experts in sports, medicine, and human rights.

False Claims of "Grooming" (Link has Trigger Warning)
https://glaad.org/groomer-definition-meaning-anti-lgbt-online-hate/

The baseless assertion that LGBTQ people are a threat to children is a common hate-driven disinformation strategy enlisted in attempts to roll back LGBTQ rights and inclusion. It implies that LGBTQ+ people are pedophiles or sex offenders that children need to be protected from.

"Trans Terrorism" and Other False Claims in High-Profile Crimes
https://glaad.org/debunking-trans-terrorism/

False claims that suspects in mass shootings or other violent tragedies are transgender are a common, anti-trans misinformation trope. This happens often in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy to capitalize on the publicity of the event. PolitiFact notes: "There's no evidence of rising LGBTQ+ violent extremism or 'trans terrorism.'"

Despite being less than 2% of the U.S. adult population, transgender people are four times as likely to be victims of crime.

So-Called "Transvestigations" of Public Figures
https://glaad.org/smsi/anti-lgbtq-online-hate-speech-disinformation-guide/#transvestigation

These are hate-driven conspiracy theories that maliciously target cisgender public figures with fake "evidence" that they are transgender. The underlying bigoted implication that being a trans person is a bad thing. This is an example of how transphobic hate harms everyone, as the targets of the harassment are cisgender people, often celebrity or public figures.

Derogatory Slur Referring to Transgender People: "Tr*nny"
https://glaad.org/fact-sheet-for-reporters-derogatory-slurs-referring-to-transgender-people/

When used in a derogatory way, "tr*nny" is recognized as one of the most extreme slurs for a trans person, similar to harmful slurs for other historically marginalized groups. Many social media platforms recognize this term as being offensive, and the use of such a term can result in account closure and immediate ban.
