In the meantime, there is already-scheduled work to be done. CUAV recently landed a state contract to provide training and technical assistance to domestic violence shelters throughout the state to better serve members of the LGBT community.

"Domestic violence programs really came out of the feminist movement, so they often don't address gay male relationships, and sometimes have a hard time with transgender people, so that's something we'll be working on," Guevara-Ross said.

CUAV is also busy advocating for the passage of AB2051, the Equality in Prevention and Services for Domestic Abuse Act, a bill that would provide resources to address domestic violence in the LGBT community, and AB1160, the Gwen Araujo Justice for Victims Act, a bill that would limit "gay panic" and "trans panic" defense strategies in the courts.
