What should I say?

Something interesting happened the other day... I was in class, and this guy who sits next to me asked me a question. Now, I've actually thought before about what I would say if someone ever asked, but never thought of a good answer. He asked me about when I got my ears pierced. As I was technically a baby girl, in Hispanic tradition my parents got them pierced at about 3 months. This guy seemed okay, and, like I said I didn't have a prepared answer, so I just told him the truth, that I'm trans. But, I'm thinking I probably won't want to go into my whole life story every time I get asked... What should I say if I get asked again? I could just make up an age, but it seems like there should be more of a story that would go along with it...

that's kind of an odd thing for someone to ask.  ???

My brother got his done when he was... he had to have been 10, 'cause we went the same day and I was five. What's the big deal?

I don't know that you have to disclose all of your private info to just any random person who asks, besides how often is someone going to ask you about ear piercing? If you must have a "prepared" answer then just say a couple of years ago at the mall. Easy, not very detailed and done!

I don't think it's that weird that a guy gets his ears pierced at a young age. My step-brother got his left ear pierced when he was really young. I got mine at 8.

In fact, my father taught me how to clean my earrings because his ears are pierced as well.

My friends and I would put safety pins in our ears when I was young. But mine have closed up now. So I want to get regular piercings with studs.  >:-)

Did you really need to tell his guy you're trans because he asked about you getting your ears pierced?  Talk about TMI!    What's wrong with "when I was younger" and no explanation?

Yeah, I agree it may have been a bit more than I needed to say.... (hence this post  :P) I guess I was just a little nervous about taking too long to come up with an explanation, or having to come up with more if he asked more questions about it. I did a lot of that sort of thing growing up (lying and coming up with more lies to cover up old lies) so as not to be outed. And also, I do believe that if more people knew that trans-people are everyday normal people, and could ask us questions then there might be less ignorance in the world. That being said, I definitely don't want to out myself to every yahoo who asks...

Yeah, it was a little out of the blue... maybe he's never met a guy with both ears pierced before? Or maybe he was just probing for an orientation. After I came out to him as a trans/gay guy he said he knew I was gay. It's a really nice change of pace, actually, to start being read as who I really am...  :)

You should of checked it when I had my left ear, eye brow, nostril,Lip and nipple full of safety pins with a spider web chain attaching them all. I got in a fight up in Hollywood. The F!@#$%r yanked the  one out of my nipple. All this did was through me into a rage that he did not expect. Doc Martin boots are great.  >:-)

I'd just tell the truth. If I were like you, and had had my ears pierced at virtually birth, I'd say, "My parents got them pierced shortly after I was born, because they thought it looked good." If you want to tell people you're trans, awesome. I, personally, am about as open about my gender identity as possible, as long as I know someone is at least somewhat okay with ts folk.
