Trust the Right to launch an all-mighty sh*tstorm about the poor homeless woman who dared ask President Obama for help last week. You can read about the specifics at:

Conservatives attack Henrietta Hughes (16 feb 2009, AlterNet)

... but essentially they've accused her of asking for a handout and of milking the system and a whole bunch of stuff that is so patently ridiculous you'd laugh if it wasn't so tragic. How far we've fallen as a species if we can so viciously go after somebody who literally has nothing.

The Statue of Liberty stands at Ellis Isle, and at its base is inscribed a poem by Emma Lazarus. I won't quote the whole thing, just the important bits:

Quote...cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Conservatives, right-wingers, Republicans, Evangelical Christians ... you would all do well to remember the values upon which the United States was founded.

Liberty Island is the site of the Statue. Ellis Island is a separate island where the immigrants landed to be inspected.

It's ironic those pinheads would attack the woman.  She and her family were loaned a home until they can get back on their feet.  The loaner was a republican.

They should attack their friend

Y'all just don't get it, do ya?

Why living in USA and breathing American air is so valuable no one should ask for a handout. We are grateful to be living here period in the greatest empire and the greatest economy and the greatest republic forged by God and man!!

Good grief, what was that woman thinking? Free shelter? She should be deported to Britain or some such socialist state!!

I think at the end times of any idea, or social group, or philosophy what you are left with are a small group of highly deluded people desperately trying to hold on to the Ancient Regime not matter how much evidence is presented to the contrary.  In the US, currently, we call such people 'republicans.'

I'm sure they could care less about this poor woman, but they really, really, hate Obama and what he is standing for.  However, Obama shreds them and they have great fear, so they attack using the back door.  These are the same nutcases who made fun of Michael J. Fox for shaking with the illness he has.  The same group who made jokes about the young woman that Isreal ran over with a bulldozer, who went after some little girl who wrote some letter a few years ago.

I don't think they understand how bad they come off looking.

Look, any group of sane people, with even a smidgen of common sense would have looked at the results of the last two elections and done a reverse Sally Field and said "Whoo, Dude, they really, really hate us.  Perhaps we should look at changing some things before they vote us, not just out of office, but into political oblivion."  Because that is the way things are headed.  Come on, its almost impossible to imagine how the public image of the Republican Party could GO DOWN since the election, but lucky for us, nothing is impossible for these numbnuts and they have been behaving and speaking in such a way that people think even LESS of them now then they did a couple of months ago, which was less then they thought of them in November when they really, really and truly got stomped on.

And I, for the life of me, just don't get it.  I know these guys went to good school, got good grades, read the same textbooks I did, worked the same problems, had the same kind of teachers, so I know what they know.  And I know that recessions, like times of growth, (and almost all things really) work in cycles.  I know they know economies work and run in cycles.  They were taught that as well as I was.  And they must know, or remember that downturns last about two years.  The beginning of this mess was about 17 months ago, so in the next year it will begin to turn around in some ways - and that's all you need, is the perception of it turning - for everyone to say, wow the D's fixed it and the R's did nothing but stand in the way.  And they will have to run on that, and face it, they don't have many seats left to protect.  How is Jindell in LA going to turn down the Federal Money and in one of the poorest states, get re-elected?

So let them keep up with the Rush Limbaugh style personal attacks on people who really can't defend themselves, I want to see them run on that again also.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...
