Susan Boyle - Britains Got Talent 2009 Episode 1 - Saturday 11th April

I love les miserables, and I dreamed a dream is one of the anthems of that musical. but I wasn't all too impressed with her singing the longer it went on. started off strong, but seemed to dwindle. amazing voice, just seemed to lose her confidence.

I thought it was heartwarming.  I thought she sang it wonderfully.
If curiosity really killed the cat, I'd already be dead.

Well good for her.  I hope she wins.  Why not.  But remember, lots of people can sing, and as hard as it is to get up there and even sing one song, but one or two songs at a time does not a singer make.  People did that with the last guy, Paul something, who did the aria so well.  Great, he can sing an aria, props to him.  But singing an aria is not, NOT, doing Grand Opera, and there is a lot more to it than singing an aria - for one thing, you have to be able to sing like that for hours, not a few minutes.

And, in both cases, its like 'lets hear it for the ugly people with some talent.'  But we all know that in the entertainment biz good looks is just part of the package unless your Frank Zappa who at least was honest enough to say 'I make ugly music for ugly people' - and we knew well who we were.

And, as far as I can tell, that's no huge social deal, no massive cultural imperative, its that we, all, you, me, and everyone else would rather look at good looking people, then ugly people (we just define it sort of different, but there are areas of pretty much standard agreement.)
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...
