The Rapid City Council ordered staff to draft a resolution which would support adding gender identity and sexual orientation to federal law as protected classes from discrimination.

The motion was made by Alderwoman Karen Gundersen Olson after she said she doesn't support a proposal prohibiting discrimination against people because of sexual orientation is appropriate.

Alderwoman Patti Martinson, who spearheaded the a tougher stance on the issue, said she would support Olson's motion but added she would prefer action being taken on the city level.

The action came after many people spoke in favor of a resolution which would prohibit discrimination within the city of Rapid City against people because of sexual orientation or gender identity.
