First up is one that you might not have heard about but is getting rave reviews so far AND is Drew Barrymore's directorial debut.
Whip It! is based off of a book (that has since been renamed to Whip It!) and it is about a girl in a small town who feels out of place. Until she ends up strapping on 8 wheels and getting involved in Roller Derby. A ton of rollergirls (including the author of the book) are extras and apparently the cast of the movie actually did learn to skate and did a lot of their own stuff, including jumping over people. Reports from rollergirls on the site state that the cast were known to have their skates on for most of the day. Makes my feet hurt just thinking about it. Word on the 'Net (by going through various roller derby sites) is that those of you with local teams should be able to meet them at the theater as many are planning events around the release.
You must have been dead if you are not aware of the next one up. ALSO releasing on the same weekend is
Zombieland starring that lovable goof Woody Harrelson. It promises to be full of laughs, gore, and a competition for zombie kill of the week. I am so interested in finding out what all of the rules for surviving a zombie apocalypse are by the end of the movie. Here's hoping that all will be revealed. Not too much more to say, after all it is a zombie movie.
Trailers can be found on the sites, be sure to watch them and then plan the outing with friends.
