Just when I thought I might be coping with all the contemptuous looks and comments someone stepped it up a notch.
Nobody did anything too out of line in the pub, just a lot of filthy looks (and a small crowd of people who could get past my appearance who were enjoying the show) - but I'm fairly sure the woman who egged me was in there, the woman I saw running away looked like one of the filthy look purveyors of earlier.
Is anyone here a regular performer, specifically musicians but if not does anyone do gigs/shows/whatever in public and if so how do you manage in straight venues??
I'm a singer songwriter and no matter how well I may ever physically pass (never going to be too well) my singing voice is always going to give me away. I like to use all of my range and dynamics, I refuse to restrict it to the higher end and softer tones just to try to pass - I'd rather be a good trans performer than a boring female one, but I really don't want to be confined to gay bars either. I love playing in gay bars but there's very few opportunities to do so. In the two straight pubs I've played so far I've found a lot less people are willing to listen to me, I can see them take a look at the stage and then dismiss me whereas normally I get at least a few people will come and check it out. This gig and the last one I've played to the other musicians. At the gig before this even one of the barmen (I think the publican) was treating me like dirt and a drunk lady was practically trying to molest me while telling me I was a ->-bleeped-<-got/softc*ck etc.
So to avoid this just being a rant (sorry

), has anyone had this problem and did you find a magical cure or just retreat to the gay scene?
P.S: does anyone know what will happen to a dry clean only item of clothing in a regular washing machine? Could I hand wash maybe? Do they shrink or something? I soda watered it but failing that I don't really want to have to go to the dry cleaners. It's a lined suit vest kinda thing, part of my favourite outfit
