    The New Hampshire House yesterday rejected a measure aimed to extend discrimination provisions to trans residents after opponents dubbed it 'the bathroom bill'.

    The bill would have allowed the words "gender identity" or "gender expression" to be added to current laws protecting from discrimination on the basis of sex, age, race, creed, colour, sexual orientation or religion.

    However, it failed by a 15-vote margin.

Opponents dubbed the measure the "bathroom bill"; they painted a picture of men and women walking into bathrooms and saunas as they pleased.

"I don't want a man coming, sitting next to me in the sauna. Do you?" said Rep. Nancy Elliott, a Merrimack Republican. "How many male prisoners would suddenly become a female to get into the girls' prison?"

Rep. Nancy Elliott, R-Merrimack, said she thought the bill would mean discrimination lawsuits against employers over hiring choices.

"I feel really bad for you men when you go to Hooters and get someone other than the girl in the little shorts," she said.

Rep. Dudley Dumaine, R-Auburn, said people would "play the transgender card" if they were fired or laid off.
