I had hoped to get my passport changed by using the gov web site on line system. I followed it assiduously, the result was a multipage document indicating what was necessary including that no fee was required. I followed it to the letter. Yesterday, I got it all back with the same blank form and a terse sentence explanation that said I had to fill out the same form and pay fees. I went back to the web site and filled out the form on line again and it was the same as the one I sent in.

I finally figured that there is no way to get the form printed out on line with a gender change correction and have it require a fee. The web site is very poor. They have two forms, a DS-11 and DS-82 but on line, the links are messed up. Their FAQ's are very poor.

So I called my local agent and the upshot is that I have to do it in person. I was hoping to avoid doing that because the application is done at the counter at the post office and every one standing in line can hear what is said. To make it as painless as possible, I filled out the form off line and have all my documents ready. I also came out to the agent and she knows that I want to be discreet.

When I got that old passport back, it was like a kick in the stomach. Everything had been going so well except the credit reporting agencies (who are being totally uncooperative).

I just returned from the Post Office and my passport is now applied for again.  The gal there was very nice. She has a friend that is also transtioning so she fully understands the issue. When we were finished with the formal stuff, she held my hand in her hands to wish me well. We both almost teared up. Not everything is a hair shirt.

As awareness increases so will acceptance, I'm glad you were able to find another friendly face in the crowd.

I found the people at the post office passport counter to be the nicest people.  Congrats on wading thru the red tape

I had a very nice experience with a very nice lady who took my passport application at the post office. I applied for a 1-year temporary passport with a view to becoming post-op soon. I supplied all the required documentation.

Then when my 10-year passport came in the male, with the wrong gender on it, and I went downtown to the passport office to resolve it, I encountered the most NOT-nice people of all. They gave me attitude and no help at all. Now I'm stuck with a passport in the wrong gender.
Here's what I find about compromise--
don't do it if it hurts inside,
'cause either way you're screwed,
eventually you'll find
you may as well feel good;
you may as well have some pride

Hypatia,
This is terrible!
I just read this:
http://www.nctequality.org/Issues/federal_documents.html

They say, "Please contact NCTE if you have recently had problems changing your passport information"

I don't know if this will help but I couldn't just ignore it. I sure hope my passport comes in OK, I changed my name and gender at the same time and according to my reading of it, there is a possibility that I have to file twice. One for changing my name and one for changing my gender.. They apparently also can just stamp over the gender marker, still showing the old gender marker underneath and send back the old passport.

I was under the impression you couldn't get the gender marker changed on your passport without your surgeon's letter.  Is that not the case?

My passport is in need of renewel. I don't know what it costs now. The last one is a ten year passport. Maggie Kaye, if you wer dealing with state dept.(not so nice people) that is standard operating procedure for them.

Jay,
You are correct. I have sent in my surgeon's letter with my app.

It costs $75 for a new or renewal by mail. It is $25 to 31 more at the post office.

What about the 1-year passport in your new gender, issued to pre-ops... so that you can travel to get surgery?

I followed the directions in the Transgender Law Center ID Guide PDF.  The part about passports starts on PDF page 60 (The table of contents says Pg 31, but there are a bunch of unnumbered example pages in the document.  Type '60' in the [Go To Page] box, and skip the scrolling and scrolling and...)

I had no problems.

I did it by mail.

I got the 1-year pre-op passport in 3 weeks (you send in a letter from the surgeon that says you have the surgery booked).

I then got the 10-year replacement at no additional charge after I filled out the correction form and sent in the Doctor's affadavit and California court-ordered Change of Gender.

Maggie, I wish this badness had not happened to you.  I hope that your trip to the post office was worth it and that you finally put this behind you.
