QuoteThis is an astonishing example of homophobic bigotry in a nursing college. A student was basically flunked out of a key course in the curriculum for a reason you will find hard to believe — here's a letter from a nursing faculty member to the student:
...

This is absolutely outrageous. Even worse, the college is dragging out the investigation, has hurt the student's prospects, and shows no sign of actually wanting to address the issue, preferring to try and place the blame on the student. The college also outed the student to all of her fellow students in the course of 'investigating' the problem. I've got a full account from the student below the fold.

I have no words.

EDIT:

As Kate Alice has pointed out, there is now speculation that this was all a hoax on the part of the student, who was actually dismissed fairly.  The above link now shows info about this possible hoax, and this link is a statement from the college:

Okaaaaay ... it's of course fine for straight girls to look after guys. O_o

Jeez, yet more of the "We can't have queers in the military/schools/hpsitals/whatever 'cause they'll corrupt the other soldiers/our children/patients/whatever!"

Straight people don't go around making every contact with another human being sexual, why on earth would gay people?!  *facepalm*

Ok, there's something not right here. In Canada, every province has protections against sexual orientation discrimination. She should be going to the human rights board of her province to get this addressed. If you look at the full set of emails, there is a whole story behind this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36800888@N02/sets/72157615921627243/

What is frustrating is that while the college didn't do anything, she also made things worse by publicizing the letters. Before doing that she should have gone here: http://www.cdpdj.qc.ca/en/home.asp By my count the supervisor had violated about 5-6 rights and since the school is a CEGEP (kind of like a community college that's run by the province) she'd have good reason for them to be involved.

As a final note, this college and instructor are the exception, not the rule. My aunt is a head nurse. Sexual orientation has nothing to do with nursing in her opinion. It's a person's ability and professionalism that matters.

Isn't this illegal?

The last thing people should be worrying about is a nurse's sexual orientation, anyway there are loads of Gay nurses and doctors here in the UK.

Two points to note.

1. The person who rejected the nursing student IS homophobic as demostrated by her actions.

2. I have never known where a patient was interested in a nurse's sexual orientation.
They are interested in competent care.

This is blantant dicrimination.

QuoteUh-oh. There is evidence that the damning email might have been faked. The "from" field of the message looks to have been crudely pasted in, and this whole story may be a product of a slighted student's imagination.

If she faked this, well do you all feel silly for raking the college and its staff across the coals. Or do they deserve it anyway?

Having just spent a couple of hours reading and re-reading a lot of this I am starting to think that the folks at Pharyngula, both pro and con Ninoska, have pretty much leaped before they looked. The "debunkers" seem to maybe not have as much a case as they think and the protesters against the sapphobic professor seem to be about as uninterested in any real story as well.

I do love the "experts" who are "debunking" her story. Apparently the police are involved at this point as well. I doubt they'll call in as consultants any of the "debunkers" at Pharyngula.

There is a local media report as well: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/Health/Nursing+student+alleges+homophobia/1479925/story.html
