Gay, lesbian and transgendered students in Nova Scotia's junior high schools need more support from the school system, the head of the union representing the province's public school teachers said Saturday.

Alexis Allen said younger teens require as much help dealing with homophobia and related issues as high school pupils do.

Often junior high students need more support with gay and lesbian matters because of the challenging stage of life they're in, Ms. Allen said.

High school students, being closer to adulthood, are usually more mature and able to handle many of these issues, she said after a conference in metro focusing on sexual minority rights.
