Largest Fundraiser Ever for Hawkins County GOP

http://hawkinsgop.blogspot.com/2009/05/largest-fundraiser-ever-for-hawkins.html

The Hawkins County Republican Party pulled off the largest fundraiser in the party's history Saturday evening May 9th at the Rogersville Middle School. The record breaking crowd enjoyed an evening of hilarity and seriouness with a "Womanless Fashion Show" which showcased thirty-three beauties of the Hawkins County Republican Party. This was followed by a veterans recognition program by Congressman Phil Roe. Three gubernatorial candidates, Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey, Congressman Zach Wamp, and Mayor Bill Haslam of Knoxville each had a chance to speak to the audience. The Hawkins County Orchestra consisting of Hale Vance, Jim Bowman. Gene Vance, Ralph Jones, and Vickie Shell had the crowd in stitches with their musical selections.

The thing about the northeastern corner of TN, from Knoxville north to KY, east to the Carolina, northeast to Bristol & Mt. City, southeast to Chattanooga is that there are perhaps 100 Democrats alive in the region. That number has held pretty steady since the Civil War when that section of the state attempted to "do a WV" and secede from the rest of the state.

It would actually be news if the Hawkins County Pubes didn't manage a record take pretty much at every fundraiser!

Or, if Hawkins County were to go Democratic in any election for anything.

Or if it were to really matter in a national election.

 yeah, that too. Rogersville and the surrounding area ain't zacly dense with folks. Although the density of the folks is seldom questioned. Vote publican!

What it is, is more proof that the 'Pubs are becoming a regional rump party, Southern and rural.  And hey, that's good news for all of us.

Those pictures look like a bad night at a bar I used to hang out at.

Though some of those pictured seemed awfully comfortable in their fem finery.  I wonder who helped them with their makeup?

Would it have been as funny if they had held a "manless" fashion show?

When will "guys in drag" stop being the easy way to get a laugh!

If someone had put on blackface and started singing selections from "Showboat" I think it would have not been as amusingly recieved.  Even in the heart of this 'pub TN county!

But you know, deep in their hearts, they really wanted to.

Long ol' river keeps hearing dat song.
You an' me, we sweat an' strain,
Body all achin an' racked wid pain.
Tote dat barge!
Lif' dat bale!
Git a little drunk
An' you land in jail.
Ah, gits weary
An' sick of tryin'
Ah'm tired of livin'
An' skeered of dyin',
But ol' man river,
He jes'keeps rollin' along!
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

Yes, I noticed that some had spared no expense in their outfits

It didn't look anything much like a bar I hung-out in in that corner of TN back in the mid-eighties. The drag-queens and trans-women there could have shown those goobers how it's done!

Although with some of them I really am thinking that nothing and no one could have been of help! :)

Not in either of our lifetimes, Sandy, and maybe never. For most of those folks I imagine that "drag" is the height of comic implausibility!!

Hmm, don't be too sure, not there. Those 100 Democrats I mentioned above? 60 of them are African or African American and all Africans and African-Americans in NE TN vote Democratic! :)

The countryside is gorgeous and if you can get a job there the living can be quite good. I'm fairly certain that few if any "diverse" companies are in the area and I am much more certain that if anyone ever found out how you'd once been configured that you'd be in some danger w/ little chance of thorough law enforcement support, perhaps even in a case of murder.

It's been many years since I lived there, but I would imagine being T in NE TN ain't nothin like easy or peaceful even now.

But, I'd suggest a 2-day visit to see the sights and then heading to either Ashville or Knoxville and keeping mum about how you were once configured.

I've passed through the area a couple of times in a previous life and I was very impressed with the country.  And, yes, the thought occurred to me while I was there that being TV/TS there would not be viewed with acceptance.  I really didn't want to have any legislation named after me posthumously.

Yep, another reason I moved to Nashville and then north. :) At the Johnson City gay-bar before I left there were regular harrassments that went on in the parking lot and on the street by the "boys-will-be-boys" crew. The police, when called, were never quite plain ole nasty, but were also never in a real hurry to find the culprits. "Give us a call if you see them again." :)

It is fairly rare around here, but I grew up in a democratic family.  Two generations back they were even active in the local party (my grandmother was a poll worker for years), but it seems like the generation before me has all gone Republican now.

I've had to tell the poll workers that they have set up my voting machine with the wrong primary multiple times.  One time I even had the person take a look and then start walking away saying no it was right.  It is just assumed that everyone is a republican around here.
Blessed Be!

Jeneva,

It's been over twenty years since I lived there, but even then it was easy to tell which way the wind was blowing in Upper East Tennessee. Now, it seems to have pretty much blown things into place for the Pubs. I'm so sorry for you and others who live there.

Your story surprises me not at all. But I feel for ya, girl. Hope it gets some better.
