In a statement to The Advocate, a Denny's Corp. representative said, "Denny's will obey all state laws and regulations in regard to restroom use. If state laws and regulations are ambiguous, Denny's handles incidents on a case-by-case basis with the utmost concern and consideration for our guests."

Chad Cloutier, an attorney representing Realty Resources Hospitality, said the ruling puts businesses in an "untenable position."

"It really is a slippery slope. This claimant may be perfectly safe and use the bathroom in a perfectly normal way, but what's to prevent a person of some devious intent?" Cloutier told the Bangor Daily News.
