This week has been very interesting. So for about 2-3 weeks- after trying different methods- I found a binding method that works really good for me and is actually kinda comfortable. Now, the results aren't as good as I'd want them- but that won't be possible until top surgery.

Anyway, this week I went shopping and wanted to try on some new clothes (because you never know how they'll fit). I asked a group of employees where the dressing room was and all three of them showed me the men's dressing room. I usually hear ma'am three thousand times a day (gotta love Southern hospitality :D). I haven't been hearing it that much this week. I haven't gotten any sirs though. The places I've been called ma'am this week were mostly places I frequent.

Now here's the weird thing. I'm not on T yet and my hair is still long. I personally don't think I pass. I can't help but think this beginning stage of somewhat passing is because of the binding. I never got this before (except sometimes over the phone). It makes me wonder what it will be like once on T and short hair. I hope these are good signs. :)

That's really cool. I haven't seen you so I can't judge, but breasts are a big one. If I can't tell gender by the face, I look straight to the chest. And if that doesn't work, the hips/walking style.

Maybe the people in the places you frequent are already used to thinking of you as a woman. Once it's in their mind, it's hard to change your established gender. They're not used to gender-changing  ;)

Radar, I've had similar experiences.  'Guarded' dressing rooms are interesting, because they force a person to make gender calls on perfect strangers.  Long before I ever came out to myself, I was getting directed to the mens' side of dressing rooms.  Usually I just went with it, but the most awkward time was when I was with my mother.  She always insisted I try everything on, and so I followed her (dragging my feet) into the womens' side of the dressing room.  The lady 'guarding' held me back in shock and said indignantly "Young man! Your dressing room is over *there*!"  I was maybe 14 and thought it was kinda cool, especially since I had long hair back then; my mother was mortified.  I've noticed that if you happen to be trying on all mens' clothes and the dressing 'guard' saw you shopping in the mens' dept., they're more apt to direct you to the mens' dressing room.

And yeah, people definitely aren't used to gender-changing.  If they're used to calling you a 'female,' they aren't going to change that no matter what happens (unless you tell them & they're cool with it, of course).  I'm not out where I work, and my voice has often been mistaken for that of another guy who works there.  However, they aren't going to put two and two together unless I tell them; until that point, I remain unquestionably 'she.'  Once you start passing regularly with total strangers and the store clerks & whatnot who knew you from before are still ma'aming you, it may be time to find new stores (if that's possible)...  Of course, you could hope that they don't recognize you after you transition, but if you go there very frequently they will probably have time to adjust to your shifting visage and will still be able to recognize you (though they might notice something's up).

Yeah, that's what I was doing. But I've done it before- before binding- and they would completely show me to the ladies dressing room. I'm just surprised how reducing (or removing) your chest size can make a difference. Like I said I don't think I pass, so I'm just surprised at what's been happening.

I live in a large city so places I go to often don't notice me because of many customers going in and out and changes in employees. It seems the only places who recognize me on a regular basis are places I eat at lunch around work. I, of course, don't expect people who are familiar with me to suddenly not "ma'am" me. Of course they will.... it's what they know.
