I reposted the Bono story to another (general interest) board of which I have been a long time (founding in fact) member.
All of those people know me as male, and in the past - when I was trying to use religion to be "healed" they understood me to be a "right winger". Part of that was my conservative politics, part of it was a natural bias found on line that anyone who is serious about their faith must be a "fundie" so a lot of them assumed things about me that were never true. But the idea that I am trans would be by far the biggest "event" in the history of the board.
I have been softening them up for a couple of years now, slowly adjusting the "persona" to reflect real changes in my life (resulting at first from getting over the illusion that I needed to be "healed" or that God disapproved of me).
(For clarification, I didn't give up my faith, just stepped away from a lot of "man's doctrines" I had been taught to believe)
Anyway, at some point I'll come out to that crowd (most of them are REALLY good people) but this story has given me an opportunity to do a "trial run" there and feel them out on the subject and, possibly, educate some folks before I come out. It's kind of like the RAD radio host situation. As bad as the original comments were, the chance to actually watch people grow and learn is very rewarding.
I do think there seems to be a lot of value in "putting a face on" the issue.
