My Voice: Issues demand goodwill

Shaw alerts us that America is being held captive by terrorists but
not the kind with which you are likely familiar. The real terrorists,
he insists, are "moral terrorists" like Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin
and Sen. Tim Johnson. Our two estimable congresspersons are guilty, it
seems, of having recently voted for HR1913 and SB909, respectively,
which are two incarnations of the legislation informally known as the
Matthew Shepard Act.
The act is designed to expand federal hate-crime laws to include
crimes motivated by "actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation,
gender identity or disability." Shaw believes gay people, the
transgendered and the disabled are "pedophiles, child molesters or
killers." Were it not a view held fervently by too many people across
this country, such an opinion easily could be dismissed as the
laughable absurdity it is.
