do you think it's a good idea for someone to get laser done first and then electrolysis for anything missed afterward? i hear people say that electrolysis is better.

Electrolysis is better.  It's pretty much guaranteed permanent.  Might take a few zaps to kill a hair follicle, but it gets done.  Lasers are currently permitted by the FDA to only claim long term hair removal, but there are girls around here that had it done 10 years ago and had no problems with regrowth.

I chose to start out on lasers because I've got the right combination of features: light skin and dark hair.  If you're tan, or have light hair, or whatever, then the laser's not going to work as well.  Not a problem for me, so I figured whatever I couldn't get with the laser I could clean up with electro.

The laser sessions ended up costing me a few thousand dollars.  No joke.  I've done seven sessions, and cleared most of my face.  I started last year, in July.  I would estimate I have about 10% of my beard left.  I started going once a month, and now I go when I have enough growth to actually get my money's worth out of the session.  However, the last few laser sessions haven't been doing much with the patches I've got left.  I think I might be catching the hair at the wrong phase of the growth cycle.

So I decided to start electro to get at the hair I had left, rather than keep throwing money at the laser.  Electro is cheaper per unit of time, but you can't clear as much.  It might take a few hours to clear the remaining hair I have, where a laser could do it in less than 20 minutes.  Electro also doesn't hurt as bad.  The amount of laser energy is way higher than the electricity to kill a single follicle.  Your skin absorbs most of that, and it feels like a sunburn.  Electro leaves your skin a bit tender, possibly swollen, but that went away pretty fast.
Everyone reacts differently to both lasers and electro, so YMMV.  My electrologist mentioned that age, coarseness of hair, and other factors can influence pain levels.  Hair density is also a big factor.  During my first laser session, my jawline hurt worse than my upper lip because the hair was so much more dense around my jaw.  I think that clearing most of my beard with the laser sessions thinned the hair out enough that I looked less like raw hamburger and more like myself after my first electro session.

I have no idea whether my laser progress is going to be long-term (or permanent).  So far the growth that was cleared hasn't come back, and it's been several months for some of it, so I'm hopeful.

The thing I really liked about doing laser is that it cleared my entire face the first time.  It takes a few weeks for all the hairs to fall out, but that would have taken hours on electrolysis.  Rapid progress, but high probability of regrowth.  Electro is the opposite, slower progress but a much lower probability of regrowth.  Depends on whether that's a good mix for you.  If you're planning on full time soon, laser might be a good idea.  If you have some time, electro will probably be a wiser investment because it's generally more effective.

If you're looking at lasers, lightsheer makes a good diode laser.  It's important to verify what kind of laser you're going to be zapped with.  Most of the stories I've read indicate that diode lasers are generally the most effective.  Other types of lasers can be less effective.  Test spots are always a good idea, but be prepared to pay for them, at least some of the time.  Also make sure to give the test spot a few weeks for hair to fall out and to see how the hair grows back on it.

I hope that helps you out!

I have had full body lasering done by Sona Medspa. My beard (face+neck) package cost me the most because I bought it when there were no specials and before lasering had really gone mainstream. I paid full price for around $1537. My total costs have eclipsed $8k, but like I said, I've had virtually everything lasered at least a couple of times. I did it because it was my attempt to cope without transitioning. The rest of the areas were 50% off or buy one get one. Now my additional treatments are 75% off. My next face treatment will be... 9 or 10, I can't remember, it'll have been almost two years.

I have a lot of blond hairs all over my body, that are rough and coarse. In fact, it was the blond hairs that really caused some of the worst problems (ass! thighs!) I have some fine dark hairs on my abdomen, cleavage, genitals, and face. I am planning to start electrolysis soon because it IS cheaper than lasering by far, and laser can't help much any more. Honestly, even a lot of the fine dark hairs seem to remain after 7 treatments. You do have a lot of reduction, but you still end up with (a little softer) stubble in my experience. Men grow body hair so fast, i'm interested to see what will happen with estrogen.

My legs are fairly close to what women's legs are like when they haven't shaved in a while, and the removal on my chest and stomach has been very successful aside from the cleavage/nipples leaving some behind. Hormonally charged areas like genitals, male upper lip, nipples, etc are stubborn.

Lasering the arm pits is FANTASTIC though, oh my god the results are the best of any place on the body, it's so cheap comparatively, and it makes you feel gorgeous for summer. I'll continue lasering those for a while.

I am *dreading* electrolysis of the scrotum.

I can second most of what Autumn has said, too.

Did one session on my underarms, and it worked great, probably about 50% of the hair is gone, the thickest and roughest of it mostly.

I tend to have problems with ingrowns around my bikini area from shaving, so I'll probably see about getting that lasered at some point.

Estrogen did affect some body hair for me.  I always had pretty hairy arms and legs, not like OMG HAIRY scary, but pretty dense and dark hair.  After 8 months on HRT, the hair's still pretty dark, but a bit thinner.  Facial hair doesn't go away (of course), but I think waiting to do some parts of your body (like underarms and bikini) until you're on HRT is a good idea just because the hormones will do some of what you want naturally.

I started with laser, a 50% off special of 6 treatments cost me $800. I've only had 3 treatments so far, but those 3 have completely removed all the dark hairs on my face and neck, and after about 10 weeks none of them have regrown. I'm left with only fine white and blonde hairs that shave plenty well enough for passing as they don't leave any beard shadow like the dark hairs do. The first treatment was with an IPL and the last 2 with a YAG laser. Although softer and finer, the hairs that are left are many so I am looking at quite a while with electrolysis after I'm done with the laser. The lady I use is a registered nurse and has offered me as many additional treatments as I want for $50 each.

Anyway, I've had good results with the laser first approach, and it has cut down I'm sure on the total amount of time it will take me to lose the beard completely and permanently.
