For most of the US, once that gender marker is on the birth certificate, that is it until you die even if you change it.
Same sex marriages or civil unions or whatever some other states or countries may have are not being recognised in most of the US. So once you get hitched in a friendly area best that you settle down until "death do you part" or until a divorce goes through. Of course this is nothing new. When I had my concealed carry permit I had to go through training (12 hours, did so with two police officers) and an FBI background check. Yet that license was only good in the state that I lived. Should I wish to protect myself beyond the borders I would have to do so illegally (except Vermont). Tried making the argument that a drivers license is accepted in every state, why would something like this not be? I knew, at that time, marriages would be next and even posted that on another board back then. Sure enough, it has gone that way and other states have even threatened not to recognise some state's DL now.
I am politically active and I do try to educate myself on the issues. It is important that we vote in every election, no matter how inconsequential it may seem. We can change things, one baby step at a time.
