So, I took a picture into a styling salon today, of an obviously male haircut on an obviously male head, and the lady who ended up doing my cut didn't bat an eyelash. She did puff it out ridiculously with a blowdryer, so my head looked like a big, fuzzy black cottonball afterwards, but a shower and some pomade fixed that.

I'll admit I was really nervous, going in to get such a drastic re-styling of my hair, but it felt necessary, and I'm impeccably pleased with the results.

Anybody else ever felt really nervous going in for a masculine haircut (especially their first)?

For my first masculine haircut, surprisingly I wasn't nervous. It was still quite gender neutral, but the reference was of a guy.

Then when I was getting my faux hawk in a definite male style and brought in the photo I was a bit nervous... turned out she loved the idea. Fancy that. I guess sometimes we make a hill out of a mole mountain.

not nervous, so much as uncomfortable having to explain i didn't want a girl's cut.

Yes, I was nervous.  Mostly about the barber thinking I was female and cutting my hair in such a fashion (it was a unisex barbershop; if it was male-only, I would've been afraid of being told to get out).  I hate spending money to have my hair cut; paying for a feminine cut (or rather, feminine stylings that I specifically said not to do) would be worse still.

Thankfully, I don't think the lady took me for female.  I already had short hair when I walked into the shop (self-done), and I think the very fact that I had tried to cut my own hair--turned out okay at first, I swear--and needed it fixed helped seal the deal.  She just laughed and said "oh, I had another boy in here earlier; he did the same thing and needed it fixed."  To which I replied: "Yeah, but how old was he?"  "Five."  >.<

Congrats on having the haircut turn out OK (pics please  ;D).

Ha ha. The people in the shop were gawking because when I went in to make the appointment yesterday, the hair was halfway down my back, and today, I'd chopped off the ponytail. They were all like "...  :o" Pretty funny.

It's both hilarious and terrifying how much I suddenly look like my brother. We don't even have the same father.

Hmm I never had a haircut that was all of a sudden masculine. I had long hair until I was 16, then got it cut short but still feminine by my friend's mom who is a hairstylist, then another shorter cut that was still feminine by my friend's mom again, but when it grew out it looked like an average guy cut, and at that point I was passing pretty well and just buzzed it all off haha. I do remember the woman buzzing it assuming I was a guy and I was telling her how I'd wanted to buzz it all off for a while and finally was doing it and she was just like "oh well you've probably had it done before like when you were little, right?" haha.

And I'm diggin the new dew mate!

my hair has practically been the same since elementary school.

it went through various degrees of layering though... but has been at a steady stoner shag cut since probably middle school or a lil before (went from flat across the bottom to more of a diagonal cut from front to back)

I did notice when I started going to the barber (well... hair cuttery or one of those type places) under a male name I didn't have to mess with it or fix anything about it when I went home
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

I like it.

I'm not really in touch with current styles but I reckon you would look great with more of a spiky do - like clippered sides and maybe a couple inches on top to style as your whims take you.

I was hoping to do something a little shorter and messier, but I have a social engagement next month that I'm still expected to look female for. I'm sure some of you guys know how that goes. I think come winter, if I'm living in warmer climates, I'll definitely try for something with a bit more spike to it.
(She wouldn't care if I showed up as a 'male bride's maid', lol, but her parents would flip, and I don't want to start ->-bleeped-<- at her wedding. As funny as it might be.)

I really appreciate the feedback  :) I was hoping for something that'd help me feel better about the way I look, and I think I found it. I'll know for sure once I've slept on it - pun entirely intended.

Nice cut. You don't look female to me. Lopping off the hair made a big difference.

I know I will, because I've been a long haired hippy for forever. :D

I know exactly what you mean, I was pretty nervous my first time. But I was more nervous that I wouldn't get the cut I wanted than I was of how I'd be seen.

I was so sure that the stylist was going to try and talk me out of the cut I wanted (or sneak girly things in like wisps and pointed sideburns, etc.) but I went in looking somewhat passable (with a ball cap covering my girly hair) and I think she took me seriously right from the get go, even though she still saw me as a girl.

When there was any doubt, she'd ask "do you want this part pointy or straight across" or "do you want the neck blocked and shaved, or left natural?" and I'd respond with my preference. I ended up with exactly the haircut I wanted. :)

I was pretty nervous the first time I got a masculine haircut, because I went into the haircutting place with my mom, and when she was chatting with the barber, she made sure he understood: "This is my DAUGHTER. She is a GIRL." So when I asked for a buzz, he tried to talk me out of it.  >:(

In the end though, I got my hair cut. (I had to insist that I understood what a buzz cut was and that yes, I really wanted one, etc, etc) I had to square off the sideburns though.

Lesson learned though- I'm never getting my hair cut with my parents around again.

Oh lol. Trust parents to mess things up. My mother would've had a cow if she'd known I was cutting off my ponytail. Again. She's really gonna blow when she sees how short I cut it this time! It oughtta be hilarious.

Braedon: That's awesome. This lady took me seriously too, I was pretty surprised. it helps that it's not a straight out "man's" haircut by any means, but it was a really big relief.

Radar: There's no reason you can't still be a long-haired hippy after your haircut! Take a look through books or websites full of surfer-looking cuts. A lot of those are ear-to-shoulder length, and look awesome  :) or maybe dreadlocks? It really depends on your personal style I guess.

SilverFang: I didn't want to come right out and ask, so thank you. I was worried it was just my hopeful imagination when a few reflections at work today looked like a boy at first glance! Ha ha.

Eh, I plan on getting mine cut shorter. I'll never pass if I don't. I'm so undecided on my haircut at this point- I'll probably die of old age before I decide. :D
