The Transgender Research Ghetto

I was browsing through journal articles today about transgender people, and this sentence hit me: "Given that this is the first article in the Journal of Counseling Psychology focused on transgender people..."(Sánchez & Vilain, 2009, p. 202).

That Journal is 56 years old - it's older than me. And it's true, this article, appearing only 6 months ago, is the first to appear in those 56 years that is focused on the transgender population.
It was a useful article, adding some very basic knowledge - a survey of 53 MtF people attending the California Dreamin' conference in San Jose and the International Foundation for Gender Education conference in Tucson. The survey addressed individual psychological distress and fears about transgender identity - the more positive a person's attitude was about the TG community, the less distress they reported. Half of the article was educating counseling psychologists about basic TG issues.
